    Israeli Professor Wins Inaugural Aquaculture Innovation AwardOctober 9, 2013 | Professor Amir Sagi from Ben Gurion University, who invented a novel biotechnology application to produce all male populations of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii through temporal RNA interference, is the winner of the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) inaugural Novus Global Aquaculture Innovation Award. Sagi is the former Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, incumbent of the Lily and Sidney Oelbaum Chair for Applied Biochemistry and a member of the Department of Life Sciences and the National Institute of Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN).

    BiondVax To Receive €500,000 Grant From EUIsraeli company BiondVax, which is developing a universal influenza vaccine, is one of six companies to receive the prestigious Seventh Framework Program for Research (FP7) award. The six companies will receive a total of €6 million, €500,000 of which will be granted to BiondVax.

    Two Israeli Women Up For $100,000 Research Grant From L’Oréal 

    Two Israeli Women Up For $100,000 Research Grant From L’OréalIsraeli researchers are up for a prestigious award from UNESCO and L’Oréal. The $100,000 grant is given each year to female researchers conducting groundbreaking studies. The Israeli L’Oréal-UNESCO acceptance committee announced that the two Israeli candidates are Natalie Zetoony of BGU, who is working on a way to manipulate bacteria using magnets and Adit Naor of TAU, who is studying genetic phenomena in halophilic archaea.

    Israeli Office OF The Chief Scientist Selects Best Startups Of 2012 

    Israeli Office OF The Chief Scientist Selects Best Startups Of 2012Three incubator graduates were chosen by the Israeli Chief Scientist’s Office (OCS) as the best startups of 2012. Two of the winners belong to incubators of the TrendLines Group. The OCS also named TheTime as the best incubator in Israel.

    The winners are Sol-Chip, a company developing technology that enables embedding solar panels into microchips, ApiFix, which developed a minimally invasive treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and CartiHeal, which developed a technology for regenerating hyaline cartilage.

    Sol-Chip is part of the Mofet Venture Incubator and ApiFix is a graduate of Misgav Venture Incubator, both part of the TrendLines Group. CartiHeal is a graduate of Elron Electronic Industries’ incubator.

    Israeli Professor To Receive Award From Queen Elizabeth 

    Israeli Professor To Receive Award From Queen ElizabethBen Gurion University professor David Newman is among the more than 1,000 people being presented an award by Queen Elizabeth as part of her Birthday Honours list, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.

    Newman will receive an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his promotion of the academic partnership between Britain and Israel. He has been a leading advocate of the academic partnership between the countries, and a key campaigner against the British academic boycott of Israel.

    Funtactix Win Webby Award For Hunger Games Facebook Game 

    Funtactix Win Webby Award For Hunger Games Facebook GameIsraeli company Funtactix, which develops online games, has won a Webby award. The Webby is the equivalent of the Academy Award for digital achievements. It is given out annually by the Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Funtactix won the Webby in the “Best Social Game” category, for its online rendition of the movie Hunger Games.

    The Academy was founded by Guy Kawasaki, and judges include such high-profile players such as Richard Branson, Ariana Huffington, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, Jerry Greenfield (Jerry of Ben and Jerry’s), Simpson’s creator Matt Groening, and others.
